INTERVIEW WITH ATTORNEY AIDA FLORIO

See full profile: Bruma Attorney - Aida Florio

Were you always planning to be an Attorney and why?

I always loved languages but when I saw some injustices too close to home I signed up for both languages and law at WITS and this is where God led me.

When meeting with clients do they mostly come to your rooms or do you mostly go their premises?

My clients come to my office

What is your preferred mode of communication with your clients?

Face to Face

Have you ever done an online video call with a client?

No

What do you love most about being an attorney?

I love that I can serve people - especially in the property field helping people who have not had houses before and now have their own house. It is very rewarding.

Would you recommend becoming an attorney as a career for school-leavers, and why?

If school-leavers are looking for the glamour jobs seen in the Hollywood movies then no - it is about serving people from the poorest to the richest person.

What qualities should South Africans be looking for in their attorney?

Attorneys who are compassionate and can be trusted.

In your view, what are the major problems and/or opportunities facing the legal profession?

It is highly competitive with many attorneys. The major problem is that clients don't want to pay attorneys as readily as they would pay a doctor for instance.

What fields of law do you, as an attorney, mostly focus on?

Property law, notary public work.

Describe your average client

My average client is a first time home buyer.

How far away from your premises is your furthest client?

Mainly around JHB.

From your experience as an attorney, if you could cite one of the biggest reasons South Africans need advice from an attorney, what would it be?

The same reason you would self medicate at home instead of seeing a doctor. In the short run, you think that you are saving money-but in the long run it will be more expensive for you. We each have a role to play in society.

Do you think the coming wave of automation in the next few years will steal some legal jobs and why/why?>

Yes probably - but we will still need one on one interaction with clients.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Church activities

What is the most interesting thing on your bucket list?

Going to Israel on a pilgrimage.

What has your experience been on FindanAttorney

It has been excellent.
